I've decided to work on a series of quick black and white paintings, just to loosen up and have fun. Working in full color is stressful sometimes, and I often feel like I'm thinking too hard :D

Over the weekend, I finished* this painting of a friend, who I know from various online circles. You can click through the image to my Flickr stream to find some process pics.

I think this one is another step closer to the kind of rendering that I'd like to eventually become proficient at... I've always been most inspired by "magical realism" or stylized realism such as the work of George Tooker, Alex Colville, or Ilya Zomb; but I try to spend most of my time studying a wide range of classical realism to keep my mental imagery well rounded. Of course, it will be many years before I can even hope to paint at the level of any of the artists I admire...but then, I suppose that's why I admire them :)

Before I go, I'd like to say hello and thank you to my blog's first two followers! The community aspect of Blogger has improved greatly since I last blogged a few years ago, and I look forward to making lots of new friends :)

*well, I may go back and touch up a couple of the shadows...but for the most part it's finished.
